Mortal Shell 2 Week 1 Update: what actually changed, and which guides it breaks

The Week 1 Update made Glimpses and Tarcores infinite, rebalanced the bosses and rewrote the riposte system. Here is what that means for a run in progress, and which of our boss guides are now out of date.

The Week 1 Update landed on PC on 29 August 2026, with console builds following. It is the second patch after Balance Patch 1 on 20 August. This one is large enough to change how you plan a run, so read the second half of this page before you go back in.

The change that matters most

Glimpses and Tarcores are no longer finite. In the launch build, both were capped resources, which meant a first playthrough forced you to commit: level one shell properly, or spread yourself thin across several and finish none of them. That pressure is gone. You can now max everything in a single run.

Two knock-on effects worth planning around:

  • Tempered tarstones yield more tarcores than they did.
  • Merchant inventories are larger, so gear you were saving for is now reachable earlier.

If you were playing cautiously because you thought you could waste a resource permanently, stop. That reason no longer exists.

Respec exists now

Mether's Severance is a new item that resets a shell and refunds the Glimpses you spent on it. Combined with infinite Glimpses, the build lock is fully broken. Experiment freely.

New content

  • Fragile Tarstones, a new tarstone class that breaks after losing durability and drops a tarcore when it does. Two named ones are in: Glimpse Stone and Egon's Stone.
  • New beacons placed through Fainweald and Mammon. The Mammon beacons are daytime only, so a night run will still find the old gaps.

More beacons means shorter walks between attempts, which quietly makes every hard fight in those areas easier than it was at launch.

Combat: the riposte rework

The riposte system was overhauled rather than tuned. Two specifics:

  • Riposte damage now scales with enemy health.
  • Invulnerability frames are now consistent across ripostes.

Read those together and the meaning is clear: riposte was unreliable against big health pools and inconsistent about whether it protected you. Both are fixed. Riposte is now a real answer against bosses instead of a coin flip.

Bosses rebalanced

Named in the patch: the Monolith, Zmey, the Lost Child, and others. The notes call this polish rather than a nerf, and boss polish in a soulslike usually means attack timings and hitboxes moved.

Performance

  • Increased Geometry Budgets, a new graphics option that is off by default and uses less video memory. Turn it on if you are tight on VRAM.
  • Frame generation reworked. It now applies after a reload rather than fighting the renderer in real time, and it will no longer switch itself on before the world has finished loading. If frame gen was causing you stutter on area transitions, retest it.

Which of our guides this affects

Being straight with you: several of our Mortal Shell 2 boss guides were recorded before this patch and cover fights the patch explicitly touched.

Guide Published Status after the update
How to Defeat Zmey the Unbidden Easily, Tiel Build 28 Aug 2026 Zmey is named in the rebalance. Treat the route as sound and the timings as unverified.
How to Cheese The Monolith Boss Easily 27 Aug 2026 Monolith is named in the rebalance. Same caveat.
How to Beat The Lost Child 23 Aug 2026 Lost Child is named in the rebalance. Same caveat.

The tarstone location guides are unaffected, since locations did not move. The build advice in all of them is now more forgiving, because a wrong investment can be refunded.

We recheck the named fights on the patched build and update this table rather than quietly leaving old footage up. When a fight has been re-verified, this page says so.
