Valor Mortis bosses: every fight and exactly what it pays
Every Valor Mortis boss with its reward read off the game's own end screen: the Iron Marshall 7,000 Catalysts, General Lothaire 10,000, Anna 14,000, Experiment 83 and the Sphinx 20,000 each, SlaughterMill 30,000. Pick what to clear with the healing you have left.

Valor Mortis pays you in Catalysts for every abomination you put down, and it tells you how many on the end screen after the fight. Which is too late to be useful.
So here is the whole list in advance, every figure read off the game's own "ABOMINATION ERADICATED" banner. When you are deciding what to attempt with the Nephtoglobin you have left, this is the comparison that matters.
Every boss, by what it pays
| Boss | Reward |
|---|---|
| SlaughterMill | 30,000 Catalysts |
| Experiment 83 | 20,000 |
| Sphinx, Devourer of the Unworthy | 20,000 |
| Anna, the Bride Drowned in Tears | 14,000 |
| General Lothaire, the Eagle-Bearer | 10,000 |
| The Iron Marshall | 7,000 |
The spread is more than four to one. The Sphinx pays nearly three times the Iron Marshall for one fight, so the order you clear these in is worth a minute of thought rather than taking them as they appear.
What each one actually asks of you
General Lothaire, the Eagle-Bearer is the first real wall. He is a Napoleonic general in a bicorne hat, fused to the body of a horse and burning from the inside, and he is on you within ten seconds of the arena. There is no approach to learn and no run back to get right, which is unusual and catches people who expect a souls-like opening.
The pistol is the part people forget in that fight. It is first person throughout with a sabre in the right hand, and the pistol is easy to leave unused for the whole encounter. If you have not picked it up yet, it is on the Demolished Path in Chapter 2 and it has its own guide.
The Iron Marshall is armoured almost everywhere, so the fight is about where you are allowed to hit it rather than how hard.
The Sphinx is a visibility problem rather than a damage one. The arena is a dust storm and for long stretches you cannot see the thing you are fighting. Knowing that in advance changes how you play it, because the instinct is to assume you have lost track of it by mistake.
Anna, the Bride Drowned in Tears goes down in under a minute and a half and pays 14,000, which is double the Iron Marshall. For the Catalysts per minute she is the best of the early list.
The thing that makes all of this harder
Valor Mortis has no map. None. Every location in this game has to be described from a checkpoint, which the game calls a Lantern, and that applies to reaching the bosses as much as to anything else.
Each fight above is filmed uncut rather than cut to highlights, because the openings and the recoveries are the part you need to see, and the route to the arena is the part no written page can give you honestly in a game with no map to point at.
